In celebrating its 100th anniversary, BIAL is commemorating a trajectory of investment and innovation, growth and success, both nationally and globally. A century of creating wealth and valuing its people and the community. t is this vision and commitment to creating wealth, valuing people and the country and, above all, this desire to do better and ability to deliver that links BIAL with the Business Roundtable Portugal Association and its ambition to create a more prosperous, fair and sustainable Portugal. Congratulations to BIAL. Together, for Portugal and the Portuguese.
100 years of BIAL! Even its longevity is an example. But the most emblematic, which must be emphasised and above all followed, is that of business development, in one of the most competitive areas on a global scale, based on valuing knowledge. That which is developed in-house and that which is obtained - and you must know how to obtain it - from universities and their science institutes.
This is what BIAL has been able to do so well over the last 45 years, thanks to the clear, relentless, and informed leadership of Luís Portela, who, as its first Chairman, left an indelible mark on the creation and launch of Health Cluster Portugal.
The celebration of BIAL's 100th anniversary is a milestone for a Portuguese pharmaceutical company who is a leader in Portugal and that has the USA as one of its most important international markets.
This is remarkable not only considering that the USA drugs market and regulations are highly demanding, but also because we are talking of a company with an impressive record in innovation, with 20% of its budget invested in R&D.
It's worth noting that BIAL had its epilepsy drug approved in three phases by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2013, 2015 and 2017. It was also in 2017 that FDA approved BIAL’s Parkinson drug. Following this approval, Bial invested more in Parkinson in the USA, by creating partnerships with American pharmaceutical companies and by launching a local R&D operation.
BIAL is represented at the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM)'s Board and is an active member of its Health Committee.
As a recognition of the importance of its business for the Portuguese-USA relationship, BIAL was awarded with an AMCHAM Tribute in 2014.

BIAL encourages the retention of talent by supporting young researchers in projects in the health sciences.

Building a 100-year Company is a rare achievement. BIAL has been capable to achieve a state of thriving where it can truly generate and flourish impact to improve the state of the world’s Health.
A continuous innovation mindset is probably the most important asset of BIAL’s people. Continuous innovation is more than just hiring great talented people and investing in R&D; it requires creating a culture in which curiosity, experimentation and acceptance of new ideas are every day recognised values.
